The First Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang history begins with an explosive start. After its premiere, the Mustang generated so much attention that it sold 22,000 models on the first day it was available. In fact, Ford had to quickly produce more vehicles in 1965, tweaking customization options along the way. Here are some more fun facts about the first Mustang:

  • Ford expected to sell 100,000 units in the first year of the Ford Mustang. It ended up selling 681,000!
  • By late 1965, the Mustang was available as a convertible, notchback, and hatchback.
  • The 1965 engine lineup included a 289-cid V8 with up to 271 horsepower, beloved among New Braunfels Mustang enthusiasts.
  • Throughout the 1960s, the Mustang design, which originated the “pony car” category, grew larger and larger.

History of Ford Mustang Cars: 1970s-80s

Ford Mustang History saw its next big event with the Mustang II, released in 1974. This subcompact provided style and luxury at an accessible price, which is partially why the car won Motor Trend Car of the Year. The 70s and the 80s saw Ford experimenting with Mustang design, refining the engine and design. Here are some of the more interesting moments in Ford Mustang History:

  • In 1979, Ford released The Fox, a new platform for the Mustang.
  • In 1987, Ford released an aero-themed Mustang, with a boxy and bright white exterior that epitomizes 80s style. Of course, these came with roaring V8’s that produced up to 255 hp.

History of Ford Mustang Cars: 90s-Today

Look at the first Mustang and the new versions that came out into the 80s. You’ll notice how different the Mustang looked from the initially popular 1965 vehicle. Ford returned to some of the earliest trademarks for the 1994 Mustang, including an interior with a twin-cowl dashboard.

  • The 1999 SVT Cobra trim on the Mustang was the first to have independent rear suspension.
  • In 2005, the exterior of the new Mustang took direct cues from the original pony car. The response was so positive, Chevrolet felt compelled to bring back the Camaro to try and compete!
  • The 2015 model of the Mustang celebrated this car’s 50th anniversary. This came with standard independent rear suspension, a 300-hp V6, a 435-hp V8, and a 310-hp turbocharged 4 cylinder.

The latest innovation in Ford Mustang history is the Mach-E, an electric crossover SUV!
