Benefits Of Synthetic Oil Over Conventional Motor Oil
In a world that rewards “cheap,” conventional oil reigns supreme. But conventional motor oil’s dominance over the last 50-plus years doesn’t automatically make it better than synthetic oil. In fact, when you push aside price, premium synthetic motor oil is far and away the better option for a majority of newer vehicles, Ford models included.
Do you know which type of car engine oil you need? Here are a handful of reasons to choose synthetic car oil the next time you visit your auto service center.
Conventional vs. Synthetic Motor Oil: What Are the Differences?
Levels of refinement—that’s how conventional and synthetic oils differ.
Cheaper base oils are typically placed in one of two categories: Group I or Group II. This grading is all dependent on the mineral-rich quality of its crude oil source.
Although synthetics use the same crude oil source as traditional motor oil, they’ve been refined along the way to perform better and last longer. Being manmade, blended synthetic oil may include artificial compounds, powder additives, and secondary lubricants that carry and distribute those compounds evenly throughout the engine. These additions push full synthetics and synthetic blends into Groups III, IV or V.
But is all that worth the cost?
10 Synthetic Oil Advantages
Fewer Impurities – Refined premium oil benefits from having smaller molecules, which intrinsically improves purity levels.
Less Friction – Because of the refinement process and molecular construction, manmade motor oil will produce less friction over the course of its life, resulting in a better-protected
Less Engine Sludge – Fewer impurities mean fewer deposits. Synthetic oil burns cleaner and thickens slower than your base engine oil.
Temperature Resistance – Full synthetic and synthetic blends handle extreme temperature changes better than standard motor oil, which makes them ideal for San Antonio vehicles.
Self-Cleaning – Certain additives inserted into synthetic oil will help prevent sludge buildup and clean the engine of any deposits that may be plugging leaks.
Fewer Oil Changes – Synthetic oil lasts at least twice as long than conventional oil. Under normal driving conditions, cars with synthetic motor oil can go anywhere from 7,500 to 15,000 miles between oil changes. (On average, cars with standard motor oil should get their oil changed every 7,500 miles.)
Skip Oil Filter Changes – Due to a lack of impurities, synthetics are much friendlier to oil filters. You can expect to change your filter every other oil change.
Better Fuel Economy – Good motor oil boosts MPGs slightly.
Improved Engine Performance – According to AAA, synthetics allows engines to perform up to 47% better than engines that use conventional oil.
Fewer Emissions – Ecologically, full synthetic engine oil reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emitted into the atmosphere.
It’s true that synthetic blends and full synthetics cost more than conventional base motor oil, but the benefits outweigh the cost increase. If your wallet can make do with a few fewer bucks, we recommend opting for a full synthetic or blended synthetic engine oil. You can even rotate between synthetic and standard oil, as changing your car oil type won’t damage the engine.
