How large does hail have to be to cause damage to a car?
Hailstones larger than the diameter of a nickel or quarter will potentially cause significant damage to a vehicle. But it’s not the only factor contributing to car hail damage. You must also consider the material (your car’s body and windows, primarily) and the direction of the hail.

Older vehicles built of heavier metal may be more resistant to hail damage. Aluminum, which is used on more modern vehicles, is prone to dents. Steel and iron bodies are much more resilient but aren’t as common in newer vehicles. Plastic is also tough, though it can crack if the hail is large enough.

Does auto insurance cover hail damage?
Your policy likely covers damage caused by hail storms. Most policies include comprehensive coverage with or alongside collision coverage. Ask your agent if needed.

Should I make a hail damage claim on my car?
This all depends on your deductible and the cost of hail damage repairs, though the average hail claim is just around $3,500.

If your deductible is low ($500 or so), it might be in your best interest to make a claim and take advantage of the “free” repairs. Deductibles higher than $750 should be closely compared to the actual cost to fix the hail dents or replace a windshield. Suctioning out a few small dents won’t cost anywhere near the national average of $3,500.

What can I do to protect my car from hail storms?

How long can I wait to file a claim for hail damage?
It’s understandable to hold off on making a car insurance claim—there’s nothing fun about it. Luckily, most insurance companies give you a grace period between the hail storm and the moment you file a claim. This grace period can be anywhere from six to twelve months, or longer (or shorter). To ensure you’re covered, it’s best to file a claim ASAP.

Can I repair hail damage on a car by myself?
If minor dents are evident, you may be able to let the vehicle sit in the hot San Antonio sun for a few days. However, the likelihood of DIY hail damage repair succeeding is low.
