2019 Ford Flex: The 7-Seater SUV Is Better & Bolder Than Ever

August 16th, 2018 by

Funky, functional, and blessed with Ford quality, the new Flex has “stud” written all over it. A jack of all trades—by all accounts, it’s a rule-breaker—the 2019 Ford Flex straddles the SUV-wagon-minivan fence like it’s nobody’s business. And perhaps that’s for the best; it makes sense as a three-row SUV just as much as it does a seven-passenger minivan with four doors, and who’s to say what the Flex should be, so long as it delivers on its family-first promises?

And deliver it does.

Space with Room to Spare

Although it’s distinctively styled on the outside, the 2019 Ford Flex exists to be more than eye candy. On the inside: space—and plenty of it.

Three rows can seat up to seven passengers easily thanks to front bucket seats, a middle 60-40 split bench, and a pair of seats in the rear. The magic is in those third-row PowerFold® seats, which fold flat to stretch cargo space to a maximum of 43.2 cubic feet (or 83.2 cu. ft. with the second row down). Plus, the configurable second-row bench can be split into 40-40 buckets, removing the entire middle seat from the equation to create convenient pass-through access to the back.

Tons of Features

The party continues inside as the 2019 Flex is fitted with a plethora of high-end features, including up to 10 cupholders, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, USB ports, and an ear-melting 12-speaker Sony sound system.

Of note is the enormous Multipanel Vista Roof, which extends from front to back, giving all passengers a first-row seat to view Earth’s great sunny abyss. The moonroof is sectioned off in threes: the front is a solid glass panel, followed by two skylights above the second-row bench, and another large window over the third row.

Power-adjustable pedals with memory are a nice addition, allowing up to two drivers to set their personal distance from foot to pedals. No more adjusting the seat manually—just press the button and go.

The SYNC 3 infotainment system is a huge improvement over past models. In fact, SYNC 3 is likely the best infotainment Ford’s offered. Integrated within the Flex’s intuitive touchscreen, SYNC 3 is simple to use and compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other convenient features available in the new Ford Flex include heated exterior side-view mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, navigation with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link®, a power liftgate, and interior ambient lighting.

Power & Towing

The base 287-hp V6 is an adequate workhorse, though we’d recommend the upgraded twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost if you really want to get things done. Making 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque, the EcoBoost is an impressive display of power, allowing the Flex to tow up to 4,500 pounds with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. Best yet, the 2019 Flex is quicker off the line than most rival SUVs its size, hitting 60 mph in a blistering 6.2 seconds. A sports car it’s not, but you knew that.

Safety & Driver Convenience

Ford’s commitment to drivers is evident in the Flex’s inclusion of several key safety systems and features.

Active Park Assist takes away the stress of parallel parking. Just activate when you’re near an empty spot, and let the SUV do most of the work. Ultrasonic sensors measure distances to curbs and other cars until an adequate spot is found. Then you shift into “R,” accelerate slowly, and adjust your position while the system steers.

BLIS® with Cross-Traffic Alert is also available. Radar technology helps track your blind spots, alerting you when a vehicle is detected. Just peer into the side mirrors to spot the illuminated light. Cross-Traffic Alert works the same way, monitoring traffic as you reverse out of backing spots or your driveway. When a vehicle gets too close: “DANGER, WILL ROBINSON!”

The Flex is equipped with a rearview camera that includes Ford’s Backup Assist Grid. Watch the 8.0-inch display while backing up to get an idea of your positioning. Easy enough.

Tired of stop-and-go traffic in San Antonio? The Ford Flex can take the hassle out of driving during rush hour thanks to Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Collision Warning. Unlike conventional cruise control, ACC tracks the speed of traffic in front of you, then adjusts your speed automatically to keep in line with the flow of traffic. Paired with Forward Collision Warning sensors and Brake Support, ACC will even stop your car to avoid an accident.
