How Much Can a 2021 Ford Explorer Tow?

During its redesign in 2020, the Ford Explorer received new powertrains. The 2021 Explorer gets these same options. You can review them below to get a better idea of how much you can tow around San Antonio.

  • 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-Cylinder:This engine produces 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 5,300 pounds.
  • 3.0L EcoBoost® V6: Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, this engine, which also features twin turbos and direct injection, produces up to 365 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque on Platinum configurations. The engine on the ST trims gets a power increase — up to 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. With this V6, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
  • 3.3L Hybrid: Although it’s more efficient, the 3.3L hybrid engine doesn’t disappoint with a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Ford Explorer: Towing Features

The Ford Explorer engines can’t take all of the credit for this midsize SUV’s towing capacity. In addition, you can expect the following features:

  • Towing & Trailer Sway Control: If instability is detected, this feature course-corrects to stabilize the trailer.
  • Sidewind Stabilization: This system helps keep you in control of the Ford Explorer, even in the mindset of strong side winds.
  • Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System™: Alternate between Normal, Mud/Rut, Sand, or Grass/Gravel/Snow modes for a personalized driving experience.
  • AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™: AdvanceTrac® with RSC™ keeps tabs on the yaw and roll rates with the help of gyroscopic sensors. This makes it easier for drivers to maintain control even if wheel-slip, understeer, or oversteer occurs. Curve Control is also included, and slows the Explorer’s speed during tight cornering.
  • Class III Trailer Tow Package: You can furnish your Ford Explorer with this package to improve its towing capabilities. It can be paired with 2.3L EcoBoost® and 3.3L hybrid engines, but comes standard with the 3.0L EcoBoost® engine.
